Summer is here! It’s a popular time for weddings around the country, and many of you will be taking on the task of organizing and arranging your own flowers for your wedding ceremonies and receptions. While summer is a great time of year for experiencing the beauty of many different varieties of flowers, it is also the time of year that flowers can be damaged by the hot temperatures if proper care is not taken.

If you are planning a wedding for this summer, and especially if you live in a hot part of the country, this month’s newsletter is for you! I’ve compiled some tips for those needing to deal with flowers in the hot weather…be sure to follow them to ensure that your flowers stay fresh and beautiful for your Big Day!

  1. Choose a flower that can more easily withstand warm temperatures. Asiatic and Oriental lilies, orchids, Gerbera daisies, irises, and mini calla lilies are all great choices for very hardy flowers in summer months. Be sure to stay away from roses, hydrangea, or delphinium if your wedding is in a very hot part of the country…especially if the event is outside. These flowers tend to wilt easily in hot temperatures, and may not last the day if exposed too long to heat.

  2. Keep your flowers in a cool area. Since we recommend having your flowers delivered a few days before the wedding, make sure that you have a cool spot available for them to sit and recondition. Basements are usually cool enough to do the trick, as they remain quite cool. If you don’t have a basement available, an air-conditioned room will do just fine. In addition to a cool atmosphere, the flowers should be kept out of direct sunlight.

  3. Cold water, cold water, cold water!! Flowers should be kept in cold, clean water while they rehydrate. You’ll be sent flower food ahead of time with your bulk orders, so you can add that to the cool water when the flowers arrive. If you see that the water is getting murky or if the flowers start to look tired at all over time, wash the containers out thoroughly and refill them with fresh, cool water. This should bring the flowers right back.

  4. Be home when the flowers arrive. While we have a signature release waiver that allows the Fed Ex courier to leave the flowers at the door, it’s best if you try to be home when the flowers are due to arrive. If you live in a hot area and are not home when delivery is made, the flowers can be easily damaged by sitting in the sun waiting for you to get home! If you don’t think you’ll be home, you can arrange to have the flowers delivered to a friend or office.

  5. Cut the stems. Of course you will want to do this anyway once you receive the flowers, but during the summer it is best to cut at least 2 inches off the bottom of the stems. This ensures that as much water as possible will be drawn up the stems, and the flowers will be fully hydrated and able to open up beautifully.
