Flowers for your Hair

Welcome to Flowerbud's Monthly Wedding Newsletter

You've got your dress all picked out, your shoes, your jewelry, your something old, your something new, a borrowed bracelet and gorgeous blue earrings, but what will you do with your hair? For those of you who aren't wearing a veil in your wedding (and even some of those who are), may we suggest flowers?

Of course, it is possible to attach flowers to a veil, but a simple flower crown can be equally lovely, or you could just tuck a few blooms into an updo, allowing them to peek out seemingly at random. If you're having your hair done professionally, your stylist may be able to help you create an unusual and beautiful style, but feel free to read on for a few tips on how to do it yourself!

First of all, you'll want to choose your flowers. Try to stick with something that matches your bouquet, but avoid flowers that may wilt, like tulips or daffodils. Roses, Orchids, Mini Gerbera Daisies and other small, hardy flowers will last longer, making them ideal. You'll want to keep whichever flowers you choose in water for as long as you can, and keeping them cool and misting them prior to the ceremony may help to further extend their life.

However you choose to adorn your hair with flowers, you'll need a few basic supplies: wire or floral wire, floral tape, bobby pins, and the flowers themselves. Make sure you start with well-hydrated flowers, and plenty of time to prepare your arrangements. You may need to reinforce the stems of some blooms with floral wire and tape (just as you would when making a boutonnière).

To create a simple circlet of flowers, make a loop out of wire. Depending on the thickness of the wire, you may need to loop it several times. Secure the ends with your floral tape, and start attaching flowers! Use the tape to secure each stem to the wire, and place the flower heads close together to keep the tape from showing.

For a more elaborate crown, start with a similar loop, and then add another piece of wire to create a frame that includes a raised section in the front, like a tiara. Stretch and glue some tulle or other net fabric between these two pieces of wire, and once the glue is dry, you can attach the flowers to the tulle, using floral wire. If you're not feeling quite that crafty, you could also take an existing tiara or headband and ornament that with fresh flowers and ribbons.

If you prefer to pin flowers throughout your hair, simply use the floral tape or floral wire to attach them to bobby pins or small barrettes, and try to position them in your hair so that the barrettes and pins aren't visible.

I hope this is helpful, and sparks a few ideas for some of you. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions, about this newsletter or just about wedding flowers in general. You might also want to browse our Wedding Newsletter Archive, which is an amazing resource. If that doesn't help, just give me a call. Thanks for reading, and have a great August!
