The Sunflower is actually one of the few well-known flowers native to America. Named for the Greek god of the sun, Helios, the flower head will actually track and follow the sun throughout the growing season. Its potential for massive size and height and ease of growing has persuaded even the most novice of gardeners to partake in contests. The largest Sunflower on record was reputed to be over forty feet tall.
Historically, Sunflowers have been grown more for their usefulness than beauty. The seeds are rich in oil, which is used for food, soap, paints and cosmetics, and they are high in protein and minerals. In the hands of the botanically inclined, Sunflowers open the mind and spirit to unexpected ideas.
Cut Sunflowers need direct light just as they do in the wild. It's typical for their heads to be bowed on arrival after spending time in a dark box. After a couple of days under the sun, they will begin to stand upright and open their petals to the light.
