A native of the Middle East where it grows wild throughout Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan. Tulip comes from the Turkish word tulband (turban) - apparently in reference to the rounded shape of its flowers.
The Tulip first made its way to Europe in the mid-1500s where it became a status symbol for the nobleman's garden. Today, it grows in over 5500 different varieties around the world.
While the Dutch dominate the world Tulip market and bulb production, American growers in several states have become important suppliers of the flower. Our Tulips come from a farm in California (owned by a native Dutchman, of course), where they grow year-round under his watchful eye.
