Question: Dear Mark, I recently ordered & received your gorgeous Iris special - thanks! I was a little confused when I got them, though -- the instructions on the food packet said to empty the whole envelope into a vase w/ the water and not to change the water since it would reduce the amount of food (they said the water wouldn't discolor). However, on the Flowerbud instructions, it said to refresh the water. Without more envelopes of food, how could I do that without sacrificing the longevity of the flower? We plan on ordering from you again and I'm sure this water/food question will be applicable no matter what we order. Thanks for any help you can provide!

You raise an interesting issue. First time in five years !!! The "flower food" is generic issue and obviously comes from a source that wants to sell more. While dilution may indeed be a slight factor it's certainly not critical. The "flower food" is actually a mild bacteriacide that is supposed to slow down water contamination from the decaying stems and foliage.

It is water quality combined with the initial quality of flowers that determines life of any given flower. Personally, and here at Flowerbud, I prefer to change the water every couple days while snipping a new end on the stems. That always gives best results. To have all our customers do that is just about impossible, hence the packet of "flower food." FYI...the smallest drop of bleach in the water achieves the same results if you are so inclined.

Please bear in mind that different kinds of flowers have differing longevities, no matter what you do. Roses may only last five or six days while Oriental Lilies may last fifteen. Always buy the freshest flowers, like those at Flowerbud, that are harvested in the US when you place an order. Make sure your vase is CLEAN. Change water if you see discoloring and always clip the stems before placing them in the water as they can seal over or develop blockages from any bacteria in the water.
